I'm trying to make taping ears easier on the dog and the owner. All the information given here is what I do that works for me. You may not like it. Let's get started.
Below are the products you will need and also links to where you may buy them. Photos may be clicked on at anytime to enlarge.
- 5/8" Door caulking or foam installation. You can get this at any hardware store for a 10' roll at about $4.00.
- ZONAS 1" porous tape. Cost $18.84 + shipping for 24 rolls.
- B-F-I antiseptic first aid power. Cost $6.90+ shipping.
- Cotton balls.
- Alcohol.
- Sissors.
- GooGon.
- Johnson & Johnson 1/4" waterproof tape.
Take and cut two 8" pieces of foam and back tape them leaving a 1/4"of foam exposed without tape. The reason for this is that the untaped end is easier on the inside of the ear. You want to back tape so the sticky side is on the out side. This will help the foam stay in place in the ear. This takes a little of practice but not hard to do.
Cut two pieces of tape 3" long, two peices 5" long and then two pieces 8" long out of the ZONAS tape. After you have done this cut a piece of ZONAS tape about 18" long and then split it in half this will be used for the brace between the ears. Put all these pieces of tape where they can easily be assemble. Now take the J&J waterproof tape and cut two 3" pieces, two 5" pieces and then two 8" pieces. I will explain what this is for later.
One of the first things you'll want to do is to put the B-F-I power in the fold of the ear just behind the flap so not to get infections. This one of the first places for infections to start.
Now we want to insert the foam into the ear down below the bump in the ear if you don't do this the bottom of the foam will pop out. Stretch the ear as much as possible then start taping the bottom of the bell with the 8" piece of pre cut tape rapping the dogs right ear counter clock wise and the left ear clock wise. This is very important to go with the flap not against it. Next make sure the ear is still stretched and take the 5" peice of tape and tape the middle still going with the flap. And now for the last piece of tape again make sure the ear is stretched then take the 3" peice of tape and tape all but the last 1/8" so the tip of the ear can breath. Cut off any excess of the foam that passes the tip of the ear make sure your carfull not to cut the tip of the ear. (MAKE SURE THE EARS ARE TAPED TIGHT BUT NOT TO TIGHT)
Once this is all done your ready to make a brace that holds the ears together. Take the 18" piece of tape and rap one complete round and the take it over to the other ear and wrap it around one complet turn. cut of any excess. Make sure the ears aren't taped to close together. When relaxed they should stick out past the head on both sides just a little around 10 to 15 degrees. This helps to let the dog work the ears without any help from the tape. When they stand straight up there should be some slack in the tape. Finally fold the tape that goes between the ears in half and then half again. It will almost look like a fat string.
It's now time for the J&J tape you cut eailer. This tape is used to help the ZONAS tape stay on and not to unravel. I have found without this tape the ZONAS tape will start comming apart very early but with the J&J it wil stay on for 7 to 10 days with no problems. That's the longest I would ever leave the ears taped up. I always take them down evey 7 days and let them air out for a day then retape. Rap all three pieces of the ZONAS tape with the J&J just one time aroung and cut off any excess.
This is how I tape my Dane. It is only my opinion you'll have to choose to use it or not. If you would need additional help or information just email me at j4f1950@msn.com. and I'll try to answer your questions. Good Luck!!!!
This is a very simple following directions will help. First thing to do is take off the waterproof tape. After this soak a cotton swab with GooGon then wipe it on all three spots where the tape is used to hold the ear in place. Wait for about 2 to 3 min. and it should just fall off. If it doesn't then resoak with GooGon one more time. The tape will fall off at this point when you pull it. You then need to take alcohol and wipe the inside and outside of the ear untile it's not sticky anymore. I then take shampoo and clean them once more. As long as their standing leave them alone and let them air out. After a day or two if they start dropping retape them for another 7 to 10 days. Repeat this process untile they stand on their own for good.
